Why make a flying disc from silicone?

Most flying discs are made from rigid plastic.

Flywave isn't.

It's made from soft, flexible silicone, and that single change completely transforms what a flying disc can feel like.

It bends. It rolls up. It's remarkably satisfying to catch.

And most importantly, it still flies.

A flying disc that's soft by design

We didn't want to make a conventional plastic flying disc and simply soften the edges.

The softness is fundamental to Flywave.

Pick one up and you'll immediately understand the difference. The whole disc flexes in your hands, giving it a tactile, almost irresistible feel.

Throw it and that flexible shape becomes a flying disc.

Catch it and it gives rather than meeting your hand with a hard plastic edge.

Then roll it up and put it in your bag.

Simple.

Why silicone?

Silicone gave us a combination of properties that suited the kind of flying disc we wanted to create.

Soft and flexible

The most obvious difference is the feel.

Flywave can bend and flex considerably while retaining its form. That gives it a completely different character from a conventional rigid disc.

Satisfying to catch

There's something surprisingly pleasing about catching Flywave.

Instead of the sharp feeling you can get from the edge of a hard disc, the silicone flexes as you catch it.

It's one of those differences that's much easier to understand once you've actually thrown one.

Roll it up and take it with you

Rigid flying discs are awkward things to carry unless you specifically set out to bring one.

Flywave can be rolled up and tucked into a bag, making spontaneous play much easier.

Take it to the park.

Pack it for the beach.

Bring it on holiday.

Stick it in your bag because you might find somewhere to throw it later.

That's how we think play should work.

Durable by nature

Flywave is designed to be bent, squeezed, rolled up, thrown and caught again and again.

There's no need to treat it like something precious.

It's made to move.

But can a silicone flying disc actually fly?

That was the challenge.

A flying disc relies on its shape, weight and aerodynamics to generate a stable flight. Make it very soft and the engineering problem becomes much more interesting.

Flywave has been developed to combine the tactile advantages of soft silicone with the flight characteristics you actually want from a flying disc.

Throw it properly and it glides.

That moment is a big part of the Flywave experience.

You pick up something unexpectedly soft, assume it won't possibly fly like a proper disc, and then watch it sail across the park.

Silicone flying disc vs plastic flying disc

Neither needs to replace the other.

If you're competing in a disc sport, a specialised rigid sports disc has been developed for that job.

Flywave is built for something different.

Spontaneous play.

A traditional rigid disc makes sense when you've decided you're going out specifically to throw a disc.

Flywave is something you can bring along just in case.

It's softer to catch, flexible to carry and designed to make casual throwing feel welcoming rather than serious.

Built for parks, beaches and everywhere in between

Some of the best games aren't planned.

You're sitting in a park.

You're waiting for friends.

You're on a beach.

You're away for the weekend.

Someone pulls out a Flywave.

One throw becomes ten. Ten throws become a game. Before long, everyone's moving.

That's the experience we designed it for.

Silicone flying disc FAQs

Is Flywave really made from silicone?

Yes. Flywave uses soft, flexible silicone to create its distinctive feel and rollable design.

Does silicone make the flying disc heavy?

Flywave has been designed as a complete flying disc, balancing its material, shape and weight to produce a satisfying flight.

Can silicone flying discs be folded?

Flywave is highly flexible and can be rolled up for carrying. Once you're ready to play, unroll it and get throwing.

Why use silicone instead of hard plastic?

For Flywave, silicone makes possible the things we care about most: a soft catch, satisfying feel, flexibility and portability.

Is a silicone flying disc suitable for adults?

Definitely. Flywave was created as something adults can enjoy just as much as younger players. You don't need to be a serious disc player to have a surprisingly good time throwing one around.
